Introduction to Laboratory
Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory contributes mainly teaching activities in the Civil Engineering Department. It provides support in a wide range of specialized areas of soil characterization and stability of the soil mass analysis and testing of soil properties to the students.
This includes: Determination of Consistency Limits and Indices, Determination of Specific Gravity (Using Pycnometer), Determination of Field Density of Soil (Sand Replacement Method), Compaction Test (Standard and Modified Proctor Compaction), Permeability Test (Constant and Variable head), Grain Size Analysis (Sieve Analysis), Direct Shear Test, Consolidation Test, Triaxial Compression Test, Unconfined Compression Test.
Course supported includes:
CE 315, CE 436, CE 438

Consolidation Apparatus Determination of change in void ratio, av, mv, cv and primary compression of the given soil (remolded) by carrying out consolidation test in the laboratory for one increment of load.
Sheartonic (Direct Shear testing apparatus) Determination of shear strength parameters of the soil by conducting a direct shear test.
Constant and Falling Head Apparatus Determination of coefficient of permeability of a given soil sample by constant head method and falling head method.
Sieve Vibrator It provides separation, fractioning, particle size determination
Cone Penetrometer Determination of the liquid limit of soils
Liquid Limit Apparatus Determination of liquid limit and plastic limit. Based on these limits, to calculate the values of the plasticity index and flow index .
Triaxial UU-CU-CD Test Systems Study of stress-strain relation of undisturbed soil specimen are investigated by subjecting the soil sample to different stress levels and drainage conditions.
Sand Equivalent Shaker It provides constant uniform shaking with automatic cycle test.
Field density test apparatus Determination of field density of soil by using sand replacement cone.
Sieve Sets Determination of the percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil by conducting sieve analysis.
Hydrometer Estimation of the distribution of soil particle sizes from the No. 200 (0.075 mm) sieve to around 0.01 mm.
Standard and Modified Proctor test apparatus Determination of relationship between the moisture content and the dry density of a soil.
ELE Core Drill Apparatus Cutting cores up to 150 mm diameter from concrete, asphalt and similar hard construction material.
Oven It is used for heating and drying of speicmens
